Prague's most photographed building

Noteworthy for: Despite its ancient history, perhaps St. Vitus' most striking feature is its incredibly vibrant Art Nouveau stained glass.

Word to the wise: If you want just a quick glimpse of the cathedral, it's possible to walk into a small space within the front entrance without buying a ticket.

Prague had to wait quite a while to see St. Vitus' Cathedral finally completed. Begun in 1344 it wasn't actually finished until 1929. Given this incredibly long history, it's remarkable how well unified and handsome the church is, its vast Gothic hulk and elaborate carving visible for miles across the Prague skyline.

Inside, there's plenty to see as well, with the tombs of Bohemian kings, Holy Roman emperors and the city's patron Saint Wenceslas all housed in its recesses. It's also home to the Bohemian crown jewels, a portal mosaic of the Last Judgement and some unique art nouveau stained-glass windows.
