Located on the People's Square near Nanjing Road, Shanghai Museum is one of the world-class museums showcasing ancient Chinese art. There are more than 120,000 exhibits on display in 11 well laid out galleries. They cover most of the categories of Chinese art including ancient ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, sculptures, scrolls, Jade statues, coins, imperial seals and Ming and Qing furniture and decorative. The museum contains 1783 pieces of ancient coins from the Silk Road times as well as from the Greeks to the Mongol Era. The ancient ceramics is one of the highlights of the museum where pottery is there to be seen from East Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The use of Jade in China as a symbol of wealth, power and longevity is well known. The Jade statues and decorative is another highlight of the collection. The 7,000 pieces of Chinese coins reveal the presence of Chinese currency and the trade patterns between China and foreign countries. Walk around the museum and admire the vast collection of ancient Chinese arts. The artefacts reveal the richness and history of Chinese Imperialism.
