Amidst the many bars and restaurants on Bourbon Street is the eerily green lit Tropical Isle bar. Quite apart from a bar and nightclub area, the place doubles as a store that sells merchandise including garments and jewellery. But it’s claim to fame is the Hand Grenade, supposedly New Orleans’ most powerful drink. The peculiar thing is that the drink is trademarked and is shrouded in utter secrecy so there’s no way of knowing what’s in it though the bar indicates there are a lot of liqueurs and secret ingredients. Served with plenty of crushed ice, it does have a melony flavour and is indeed quite potent. Making it more cheesy is the fact that it is served in a green plastic container that looks like a hand grenade with a long neck!
