The rooms in this historic six-story building may be small, but their ingenious, nautically inspired design (with storage space over and under the beds like a ship's cabin) and high-quality furnishings (plush mattresses and crisp linens) make them a cut above the usual bargain fare.
Most rooms here are singles, with well-maintained and quirkily designed communal bathrooms on each floor, but visitors who like their shabby chic with the convenience of an en suite can book a double-sized captain's cabin - from USD 250 a night, it's still one of the best deals in downtown Manhattan.
