Word to the wise: Graciously decline offerings of food or drink from strangers on public transport - druggings and robberies have been known to occur.
All things considered, India remains a pretty safe country. But it's important to keep your wits about you. Here, some advice:
* The number one survival tip for those on a budget is that if you cannot securely lock the door of your lodgings from the inside, do not stay there.
* If anyone tells you that your e-ticket for Indian Railways needs to be stamped, for a fee, ignore them - this is a scam.
* India, Delhi included, is full of imitators. If you are staying in a popular hotel, ensure your driver drops you at at the right place, not one with a similar name. The same goes for restaurants.
* With bottled water, always make sure the seal is intact. It goes without saying that you shouldn't drink tap water.
* Female travellers will invariably receive unwanted male attention at some point during their visit. Refrain form wearing revealing clothing, and do not stare back or comment - it can be construed as a come-on.
