How to protect yourself against street crimeWord to the wise: Avoid being an obvious target for thieves by dressing as chicly as a local: smart clothes in muted colours and good shoes are a must.
Barcelona is not a dangerous city and the chances of anything terrible happening to blight your trip are slim. Nonetheless, like in many major cities there is a certain amount of street crime, concentrated in the areas where, as a visitor, you're likely to go, so it pays to be aware.
Stations and, especially, La Ramblas, are known for pickpockets: keep valuables out of sight and, when in cafes, don't leave your bag on the floor or hooked over the back of your chair.
When out on the streets, again especially on La Ramblas, don't let yourself be distracted. Men might find themselves approached by women who attempt to link arms and then rob them, and the old 'bird poo' scam is still occasionally practiced. Don't be tempted to join in with gambling games on La Ramblas - you won't win.
Otherwise, just use your common sense and avoid dark, empty streets late at night, especially when alone.
