Ethically designed modern living
Word to the wise: On a sunny day, bring a disposable barbecue (available in most supermarkets in summer) and cook up a feast on the waterside decks.
Strict restrictions have been imposed on the buildings, technical installations, waste disposal and even the traffic that runs through the area – all part of the goal of creating 50 percent less emissions than housing being built in other parts of Stockholm at the same time.
The result is a charming community of sleek and modern – but characterful – apartments, and a range of communal spaces including funky designed decking structures along the water's edge and lush green areas with minimalist fountains. It goes without saying that this is a design buff's dream, but it's interesting to see innovative living situations, no matter what your interests – and it helps that the cafes are lovely in summer.
To get here take the short boat-ride from 'Barnängen' stop in Sofia, Södermalm.
