Before Katrina, the Uptown neighbourhood known as Freret had been in decline for decades. But flooded waist-high in 2005, it has bounced back to become one of New Orleans' hot new destinations.
Restaurants include the High Hat Cafe (4500 Freret), serving Mississippi and Louisiana-inspired soul food; Ancora (4508 Freret), a pizza and salumeria joint cooking the finest crispy Neopolitan-style pizzas; and The Company Burger (4600 Freret). Hot dog fans should seek out Dat Dog's gourmet dogs (5030 Freret), or refresh with juices or natural New Orleans-style ices called snoballs from Beaucoup Juice (4716 Freret).
