Indians make up just 9% of Singapore’s resident population, and many have long been part of its middle-class, English-speaking mainstream. So why are racist posts trying to paint them as a sudden threat?

If you placed a camera on a busy street in an immigrant-majority neighbourhood on a weekend, what would you expect to see? A lot of people out and about — obviously — and those people would largely be immigrants. It's just a case of sampling. But this is how videos and photos shared on social media tried to make the case that Singapore is "overcrowded" with Indians — a "concentration of curry", as the deeply racist posts called it.
