Southeast Asian countries embroiled in long-running maritime disputes with Beijing in the strategically important South China Sea are lining up to acquire the BrahMos supersonic missile. So, what makes this weapon system so attractive?

India’s homegrown BrahMos missile had attracted global interest long before it demonstrated its battlefield effectiveness during Operation Sindoor last year. Now, more countries are joining what could loosely be described as the BrahMos club.

India has signed a deal to export the missile system to Vietnam, while a similar agreement with Indonesia is in its final stages, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said during a recent visit to Singapore.
