WhatsApp is one of the most used online messaging apps worldwide. The Meta-owned platform makes it easy to share messages, photos, videos and updates with friends and family. However, to help reduce spam and the spread of misinformation, the platform has placed limits on how many times a message can be forwarded and to how many people it can be shared at once.
If you have ever seen the "Forwarded" or "Forwarded many times" label on a message, you may have wondered what these tags mean and whether there is a limit on sharing such content. Here is everything you need to know about WhatsApp's message forwarding rules, including how many chats you can forward a message to at once, and what to do if you run into forwarding limit issues.
How many times can you forward a message on WhatsApp
You can forward a message to up to 5 people or groups at once. If someone forwarded you a message or update, you can only share it in a group chat. If a message or update has been forwarded at least 5 times since it was first sent, it:
- The " Forwarded multiple times " label appears.
- Often forwarded (two curved arrows overlapping each other) appears.
This way your WhatsApp conversations remain private and helps prevent the spread of spam and misinformation.
Forwarded messages and end-to-end encryption
WhatsApp messages include a counter that keeps track of how many times a message has been forwarded. This counter is end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp can't tell how many times a message has been forwarded.
End-to-end encryption means that only your devices and the recipient's devices can access this information. Your chats are end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp can't see or read the content of your personal messages. When you forward channel updates to public chats and group chats, these forwarded updates are protected by end-to-end encryption.
You can forward messages to Meta AI to ask questions or learn more. Meta AI can only read messages that people share with it. Meta cannot read other messages in your personal chats because your personal messages are end-to-end encrypted.
How to fix forwarding limit issues
If you're having trouble forwarding messages and haven't reached your forwarding limit, we recommend that you:
- Restart your phone or turn it off and on.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Update your phone to the latest version.
