Apple rolls out security update for AirPods, Beats earbuds
Apple has released the latest firmware update for several audio products. This includes the USB-C and Lightning variants of AirPods Pro 2, first-gen AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, second and third-generation AirPods, Beats Fit Pro and PowerBeats Pro.
The latest firmware update brings the second-generation AirPods Pro, PowerBeats Pro, and Beats Fit Pro to version 6F8, up from 6F7.
Meanwhile, other models have been upgraded to version 6A326, from the previous 6A321.
Typically, Apple's release notes for AirPods firmware updates provide limited information about the changes. However, the company has issued a separate support document to address a security vulnerability that has been resolved in these updates.

How this security flaw could’ve affected users

The latest update fix a security issue that could have allowed an attacker within Bluetooth range to impersonate a previously connected device, potentially gaining unauthorised access to the headphones.
In the support document, the company explained the security flaw: “When your headphones are seeking a connection request to one of your previously paired devices, an attacker in Bluetooth range might be able to spoof the intended source device and gain access to your headphones.”

Apple usually notes in its support documents if a security problem has been actively exploited, it hasn't indicated that in this case. However, it’ll be wiser for users to update their headphone firmware promptly. Once a vulnerability is known, others may attempt to exploit it, making it crucial to stay updated.

How to install an update on your AirPods and Beats devices

Firmware updates for AirPods are typically installed wirelessly when they are connected to an iPhone. To ensure that AirPods or Beats receive the update, users need to place them in their case, connect the case to a power source, and pair the earbuds with their iPhones.
Beats users with Android phones can manually update the firmware using the recently updated Beats app for Android.
To check if the AirPods are up to date on the iPhone or iPad, ensure they have the latest iOS or iPadOS version installed. Then follow these steps:
  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Bluetooth.
  3. Find your AirPods in the list and tap the Info button next to their name.
  4. Scroll down to the About section.
  5. The firmware version will be displayed there.
