- The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected an unconditional apology yoga guru Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved MD Acharya Balkrishna offered in the misleading advertisements case.
- The bench comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah also criticised the Uttarakhand government for its failure to take action against Patanjali for violating the law.
- The apex court has scheduled the case for further hearing on April 16.
- “Tendering apology is not enough. You should suffer the consequences for violating the court's order. We do not want to be generous in the case,” the apex court said.
- SC also slammed the Uttarakhand government for not taking action against Patanjali for violation of law. “You kept twiddling your thumb when the law was being violated with impunity. The concerned officers must be dismissed,” the apex court told the state.
- “We are appalled to note that except pushing the file, nothing has been done,” it said.
- Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said, “We have a strong objection to the use of the word 'bonafide' for officers. We are not going to take it lightly. We will rip you apart."
- Dr Mithilesh Kumar, the joint director of the state's Food and Drug Administration, begged for mercy with folded hands. "Please spare me..." he told the court, "I came in June 2023... this happened before me."
- The court, not in a mood to relent, said “Ab ghar pe time bitaiye [now spend time at home].”
- The case sprang from a plea filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) alleging a smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and modern systems of medicine by Patanjali and its promoters.
- On March 19, the court directed Ramdev and Balkrishna to appear before it, taking exception to Patanjali’s failure to respond to the notice issued in the case relating to advertisements of the firm's products and their medicinal efficacy. More here
