Team USA is set to face Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off final on Thursday. Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes will be joining the team as an injury replacement, as another injury would be required for him to play. Hughes has been skating with his Canucks teammates in Vancouver.
“We’re going to take each day as it comes and we’ll see what we have available to us, and we’ll make decisions accordingly,” American head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters on Tuesday.
Hughes, a Canucks captain, was named to Team USA but had to withdraw due to an injury. He missed the Canucks' final four games before the 4 Nations Face-Off. Hughes is currently leading the team in scoring with 59 points in 47 games.
Last season, Hughes won the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenceman, leading the Canucks to their first non-bubble playoff appearance since 2015. He is replacing Charlie McAvoy, who was hospitalized with an upper-body injury.
Quinn Hughes is from a family of ice hockey players; his younger brother Jack was drafted first overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2019 NHL entry draft, while his youngest brother Luke was drafted fourth overall in the 2021 NHL entry draft, also by the Devils. His mother Ellen Weinberg-Hughes played for the United States women's national ice hockey team and his father was the director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
