Meanwhile, certain influential and experienced names such as Bruce Cassidy, Jay Woodcroft, and Manny Malhotra have surfaced in speculation. Recent reports indicate Toronto may be considering less conventional options to reshape the franchise's future direction.

The club recently faced a major setback after a highly regarded University of Denver coach David Carle, reportedly declined an opportunity to join the organization. According to insider Darren Dreger, two notable names have advanced to the latest stage of Toronto’s interview process, and sources suggested that Patrick Roy and Peter Laviolette are a part of this week's stage of the interview process.

Taking to his X/Twitter account, the insider wrote, “The Toronto Maple Leafs coaching search is getting more interesting. Sources say Patrick Roy and Peter Laviolette are a part of this week's stage of the interview process.”


Interestingly, Toronto has received permission from the New York Islanders to interview the Hall of Fame netminder Patrick Roy for its head coaching vacancy. As per reports, Roy was previously associated with the Islanders’ bench before being dismissed. While his tenure ended abruptly, Roy posted a respectable 42-31-5 record this season and compiled a 97-78-22 mark during his time with the franchise.

Analysts are currently of the view that the franchise could be seeking a coach capable of building a sustainable culture rather than relying solely on an established NHL veteran. While nothing has been confirmed so far, the growing possibility of hiring an unconventional candidate has sparked speculation, creating skepticism in Toronto's offseason plans.
