Team USA eyes first Olympic gold since ‘miracle on ice’ at Milano Cortina 2026 Men’s Hockey

The puck will drop on the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games men's hockey competition on Wednesday, signaling the start of a heightened rivalry among the 12 countries competing for the coveted gold medals. The competition is divided into three groups of four teams each. A series of games will be played before progressing to knockout competitions, which will end on February 22nd, the final day of the events.

Group C is already making significant buzz. Headlined by the US team, the group also includes powerful opponents such as Germany, Denmark, and Latvia. With the NHL stars returning to the Olympic floor again, the excitement is all set to scale new highs. Every game is going to count.

The US enters the Milano Cortina 2026 with a singular objective: win its first gold medal in the men's hockey tournament since the famous 1980 “Miracle on Ice.” After taking home silver medals in 2002 and 2010, only to fall short to Canada both times, as well as again taking home the silver medal from the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament last season, the US is taking the stance that it’s “gold or bust.”

Coach Mike Sullivan’s roster focuses heavily on chemistry, with 21 of 25 players returning from the 4 Nations tournament. While some of the top goal scorers in the NHL were not selected for the team, Team USA has some of the best offensive players in the league and top-notch defense. The objective is to stand atop Group C and blitz through the medal competition.

In other words, they are still a threat. Germany, however, may be the group's most treacherous opponent. With NHL star Leon Draisaitl, arguably one of the most productive players in the NHL, Germany is bringing skill and attitude to the games. The silver medalists at the 2018 Games and the 2023 IIHF World Championship, Germany, may have assembled their best tournament roster to date.

Denmark, making only its second Olympic Games appearance with the NHL participating, is a country that has valuable tune-up experience from the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The country boasts the presence of veterans Nikolaj Ehlers and Frederik Andersen, who have already proven that they have the mettle to beat the established powerhouse teams.

Latvia, on the other hand, will draw energy from the impetus that emerged from the bronze medal success of the 2023 World Championship. Latvia boasts a loyal following, a good foundation, and a reputation as a giant killer in the Olympic Games.

In addition, all Group C matches will be broadcast nationally throughout the U.S. via NBC and in Canada via CBC, as the road to the Olympic gold medal begins.
