Will we see Dak Prescott playing again this season? Cowboys QB's latest injury update is not a good news for Jerry Jones' team

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury sustained in Week 9. Prescott's season ends with disappointing numbers, including 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games. Backup Cooper Rush takes over as the starter, but his first outing resulted in a heavy loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Dallas Cowboys' hopes for the 2024 season have taken a significant hit following the announcement that star quarterback Dak Prescott will not return this year. Prescott, who sustained a hamstring injury during Week 9’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, has officially been placed on season-ending injured reserve, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This development has left the Cowboys reeling, with questions about how they can salvage what has become a turbulent season.

It's been a year of struggles for Prescott and Cowboys

Prescott’s year was already off to a rocky start, even before the injury derailed his season. In eight games, he recorded 1,978 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. This performance marked a decline from his stellar 2023 campaign, where he delivered 4,516 passing yards and 36 touchdowns. Despite a lucrative four-year, $240 million contract extension, Prescott's 2024 numbers fell short of expectations. Now, with surgery confirmed to repair the partially torn hamstring, Prescott faces months of recovery. Jerry Jones, the team owner, assured fans during a radio interview that “his prognosis is wonderful,” though the team will have to move forward without him for the rest of the season.

With Prescott sidelined, the Cowboys are relying on Cooper Rush to lead the offense. However, Rush's performance in his first start against the Philadelphia Eagles was underwhelming, resulting in a 34-6 loss. Completing just 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards and losing two fumbles, Rush has not inspired confidence in his ability to steer the team to victory. The team might consider giving backup Trey Lance more snaps if the struggles persist. Lance showed glimpses of potential during the Eagles game, completing 4-of-6 passes, though his outing included an interception.

Currently standing at 3-6, the Cowboys face an uphill battle to keep their season alive. Without Prescott’s leadership and playmaking ability, the offense will need to find alternative ways to stay competitive. While Prescott’s 2024 campaign has ended prematurely, his focus will undoubtedly shift toward making a strong comeback in 2025. For now, the Cowboys must navigate the remainder of the season without their star quarterback, facing the harsh realities of life without Dak Prescott.
