Just shy of a couple of days before the NBA Trade deadline came to a close this time around, two teams - the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers - pulled off a trade that almost no one had seen coming. From the players to their agents, no one knew about it until the news had already hit the headlines, that was the magnitude of secrecy that was maintained throughout the process. But Anthony Davis' agent, Rich Paul, is not completely surprised that it was the Mavs that ended up with AD in the process.
NBA veteran Anthony Davis goes to the Dallas Mavericks, but it wasn't a complete shock
While the trade in itself baffled almost everyone, the fact that Anthony Davis is now a player out of Dallas is not a complete shock to his agent, Rich Paul. In an interview with
The Smoking Cuban on Friday, he revealed how much Nico Harrison, the Mavs GM, has always loved and admired AD. And the fact that he would want the latter in Dallas does not shock him.
"It was a shock. The timing of it was a shock, who it was was a shock, but I'm not shocked that AD's in Dallas. I'm not shocked about that at all. I've known Nico for 20-plus years, and I know how he felt about AD. So that doesn't shock me at all. But just like everyone else, the timing of it was a shock, and who he was traded for was also a shock."
The agents of both Luka Doncic as well as
Anthony Davis were unaware that their clients were being traded from one team to another. The Lakers, as well as the Mavs, kept the whole process airtight, without anyone knowing, and that was probably the big shock. But the biggest was definitely the players involved in the trade.
Nico Harrison and Anthony Davis apparently go way back
Nico Harrison has probably wanted Anthony Davis in Dallas ever since he joined the team as their General Manager. But his relationship with AD goes way back - ever since he was with Nike. Back in 2023, rumors were already swirling about a trade between the Mavs and the Lakers surrounding Davis, but it never materialized. Now, two years later, Harrison finally has what he has wanted for a while. Speaking about Harrison and his latest move, Davis himself said:
"When he was with his tenure with Nike, I've just been a Nike athlete, so we've just been close like that and developed a relationship. Having Nico here, familiar with J-Kidd, Duds...It made the transition a lot smoother."
He also made some bold claims while being introduced as the new player in the Dallas Mavericks, throwing in words like, "I'm gonna give the city life back."
For those unaware, the Mavs sent
Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick earlier this week. This was probably one of the biggest trades in NBA history. And we get to see it unfold.
