NEW DELHI: Atlanta Braves have made a significant move by signing newly acquired left-hander Chris Sale to a two-year contract extension valued at $38 million. This deal represents a restructuring of Sale's previous contract with the Boston Red Sox, which was set to expire after the upcoming season.

Under the terms of the extension, the 34-year-old Sale is slated to earn $16 million in the 2024 season and $22 million in 2025. The agreement also includes a buyout-free club option for the 2026 season, valued at $18 million.

The Braves acquired the seven-time All-Star in a recent trade with the Boston Red Sox, along with cash considerations, in exchange for promising infield prospect Vaughn Grissom.

Sale, who waived his no-trade clause to facilitate the move to the National League, has faced injury challenges in recent years. Despite his injury history, the left-hander remains a formidable pitcher, making 20 starts in the previous season and a total of 31 starts over the past three seasons.

Sale did not pitch in 2020 due to Tommy John surgery, and he encountered a stress fracture in his scapula during the 2023 season, finishing with a 6-5 record and a 4.30 ERA in 20 starts.

Throughout his 13-season career with the Chicago White Sox (2010-2016) and the Boston Red Sox, Sale has amassed impressive statistics, including a 120-80 record, a 3.10 ERA, 2,189 strikeouts, and 416 walks.

A seven-time All-Star, Sale was a consistent force in the American League, finishing as high as second in the Cy Young Award voting in 2017 and third in 2014. The left-hander's move to the National League with the Braves adds a seasoned veteran presence to the team's pitching rotation.
