Anthony Joshua’s driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode in crash case appears in Nigerian court as hearing is further adjourned till March
The driver involved in the car crash that injured British boxing star Anthony Joshua and killed two of his close team members has appeared before a Nigerian court. The accident happened on December 29 near Lagos. Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, died at the scene after their vehicle collided with a stationary lorry. The former heavyweight champion, 36, survived and was taken to hospital with injuries.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode visited the Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State on Wednesday. His case was adjourned until March 13 as prosecutors requested more time to gather and prepare evidence. Authorities have filed several charges against him. They include causing death by dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. The crash occurred on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in south-west Nigeria.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode was driving a Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua and members of his team when the vehicle struck a parked truck. Investigators later reported that the car was travelling at a high speed before impact. The collision left Joshua with minor injuries but resulted in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
The defendant has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence. He made his second appearance in court but has not yet entered a plea. Prosecutors explained to the magistrate that they required additional time to complete the evidence file before proceedings could continue.
The driver had earlier been charged in January and was granted bail set at five million naira. The court allowed him temporary release while the investigation continued. Officials said the case involves multiple technical reports and witness statements connected to the crash.
The incident has also highlighted concerns about road safety on Nigerian highways. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of the country’s busiest roads and has recorded several serious accidents in recent years. Authorities are expected to continue the case in March, when the court will review the gathered evidence and decide the next legal steps.
Joshua was treated in hospital and discharged two days after the accident. He later travelled back to the United Kingdom to recover. The deaths of his trainer and strength coach deeply affected his team.
