Team USA star Mikaela Shiffrin reveals how a small misunderstanding almost ended her love story with fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde

Team USA skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin recently opened up about an early misunderstanding in her relationship with fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, sharing how their love story almost did not happen. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Shiffrin explained that Kilde once stopped reaching out after a moment she thought was a joke but he understood as rejection. The couple, who announced their engagement in April 2024, first connected through Instagram in winter 2020.

At that time, Mikaela Shiffrin was still dealing with personal grief after the loss of her father, Jeff Shiffrin, in 2020. She said she was emotionally closed off and not ready for a relationship. Even so, Kilde’s honest and supportive approach slowly changed her mind. Now, with the 2026 Winter Olympics underway and wedding plans waiting until after competition, Shiffrin says their relationship has become a major source of stability and support in her life.

Mikaela Shiffrin said the early stage of her connection with Norwegian alpine skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde included a misunderstanding that almost ended things before they truly began.

According to Mikaela Shiffrin’s interview with Us Weekly, Kilde asked her about having dinner after a sponsor event. She responded jokingly, saying they had already eaten.

She believed she was being funny, but he thought she was turning him down. After that, communication slowed, and Shiffrin assumed he had stopped texting on purpose.



Looking back, Mikaela Shiffrin explained that she was not ready for romance at the time. She said she felt emotionally shut down after losing her father and did not think she could handle getting close to someone again.

Still, she noticed something different about Kilde’s messages later on. She said his kindness and patience made her feel safe, which slowly helped her open up.

Over time, their bond became stronger. Shiffrin shared that Kilde has supported her through personal growth and helped her communicate better.

She described his presence as meaningful and said he has played an important role in her life both on and off the slopes.

The couple announced their engagement in April 2024, but both have decided to wait until after the 2026 Winter Olympics to focus on wedding plans. As the Games continue, Mikaela Shiffrin remains focused on competition, including her women’s slalom event.

While wedding details are still undecided, she said both of them laugh about choosing between a big celebration or something small. For now, skiing remains the priority, but their shared journey continues to grow.
