The talk around Kei Nishikori suddenly picked up just before the Sarasota Open, and not for the right reason. A statement from the tournament director made it sound like this could be the final week of his career. That quickly spread online, and many fans started believing that the former top player was about to retire.

But Nishikori stepped in himself to stop the confusion. Just hours after the rumors started moving around, he posted a clear message online. He said he is playing the tournament, but he is not retiring this week. His direct words helped calm things down and gave fans clarity before the event even began.

The situation began when Sarasota Open tournament director Elizabeth Moore spoke about Nishikori’s participation. According to Herald-Tribune, she suggested that the Japanese player had asked for this event to be his final one. That line quickly caught attention and spread widely.

Nishikori did not wait long to respond. He took to X and wrote, “Hi everyone. Lots of false info out there. YES, I am playing the Sarasota Challenger at the @IMGAcademy, and NO I am not retiring this week. I will make an update myself on this topic in the near future. Thank you.”

That message made his position very clear. He is still playing, and any decision about retirement will come from him directly, not through others.

The tournament itself is also seeing a change in venue. Earlier editions were held at the Sarasota Sports Club, but this time it is being played at IMG Academy from April 5 to April 12. Nishikori, who once won this event in 2010, is now back again, trying to rebuild his form.

Right now, he is ranked 417 in the world. He will start his campaign in the Round of 32 against Argentina’s Nicolas Kicker. Along with him, players like Cristian Garin, Zachary Svajda, Rinky Hijikata, Martin Damm Jr., and Colton Smith are also part of the draw.

Looking at his journey, Nishikori has had a strong career. He turned professional in 2007 and became the first Japanese player to reach a Grand Slam final in 2014. He lost that final to Marin Cilic, but it still remains a historic moment for Japanese tennis.

Over the years, injuries slowed him down, especially after 2017. In recent seasons, he has mostly played Challenger events and is still trying to find rhythm again. So far in 2026, his results have been limited, with only one main draw win. For now, the focus is simple. Nishikori is still competing, and he is not ready to close his career just yet.
