Monaco E-Prix winner Nyck de Vries believes bygones should be bygones: “Looking ahead is the key”
Mahindra Racing driver Nyck de Vries endured a disappointing start to the season before making everyone forget that difficult spell with his victory in Monaco. Ahead of the race, the Mahindra Racing driver reflected on the challenges he had faced and explained that success is rarely as straightforward as it may appear from the outside.
Speaking to Jodie Writes Racing, Nyck de Vries said, “I mean, there is always pressure to perform and to do well, and I don’t necessarily feel the pressure to be on top or winning because I think our primary objective should be to be better than last year, to improve on last year and to see what is possible from there. But you don’t go from last, to P4, to winning a championship. It is not as straightforward as it could look or as you’d wish.”
The 31-year-old Dutch driver also spoke candidly about coming to terms with the mistakes he has made this year, although he admitted that doing so is easier said than done.
“Everything that has happened is in the past and it’s almost irrelevant. The mistakes we were in control of – or I was in control of – so hopefully we’ve learnt from those. But apart from that, there’s no point really being frustrated about it because it’s not helping us move forward. I would say that looking ahead is the key, but it’s easier said than done.”
He said, “You’ve got to be realistic with the targets and the expectations. I think the team has done a great job so far this year. Edo has had a very strong run, which is great to see, and I’m happy that he’s been able to do that because it’s very important for us as a team.”
Mortara currently sits third in the Drivers’ Championship with 103 points. De Vries is tenth with 43 points, but with seven races still remaining on the calendar, there is plenty of opportunity for him to finish the season strongly.
The next Formula E round will be the Sanya E-Prix in China on June 20.
