NEW DELHI: Mohammed Siraj has become one of the most important weapons of Team India's armoury in a very short span of time. Moreover his exploits with the white ball propelled him to the top of the ICC ODI Rankings.
But Siraj, who earlier held onto the top spot as well, said the number one ranking doesn't hold any significance for him and his ultimate goal is to see India lifting the World Cup trophy.
"To be honest, I was No.1 for some time in between, then I went down. The number doesn't matter to me. The goal is that India wins the World Cup. That is the team and my goal," Siraj said in a video posted by the Indian Cricket Team on Instagram.
"I hope my performance is good for India. This is all that matters.
"I feel so proud to be part of this team. The involvement and giving such a performance in the World Cup. I am glad to be with this team. All I want is that this team performs well in each match from here. So, very happy with this unit," said Siraj.
Siraj, who has grabbed 10 wickets so far in eighth World Cup matches at an economy rate of 5.23, displaced South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj from the top.
Indian pacers have made significant strides, with Jasprit Bumrah climbing three spots to secure the eighth position, and Mohammed Shami leaping an impressive seven spots to claim the 10th spot on the chart.
India opener Shubman Gill on Wednesday also became the top-ranked ODI batter replacing Pakistan skipper Babar Azam from the top of the chart.
