The discovery of an entirely closed cave took place in 1986 during the exploration of land around the coastline of the Black Sea when workers sought a site for building a new power station. Instead of finding the intended location, what the explorers stumbled upon was much more fascinating: a cave ecosystem isolated from the surface for about 5.5 million years. Known as Movile Cave, it was a unique habitat wherein organisms exist entirely without any trace of sunlight. For the vast majority of biological life on Earth, sunlight is absolutely vital since life on Earth is dependent on light for survival. Most surface ecosystems ultimately depend on sunlight for further production of energy. However, in this particular case, the Movile Cave shows that complex ecosystems can be powered without sunlight. This completely dark environment is filled with toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide, methane, and ammonia. There is an extremely low level of oxygen here as well.It became a completely unexpected discovery of a new worldIndeed, the discovery of the Movile Cave caused great surprise among scientists, who found that it was a perfect natural lab, having been totally sealed off from the outside world all along.
In addition, it became clear that the Movile Cave remained absolutely isolated from the atmospheric air for the last 5-6 million years. Apart from this, the cave did not include a few lost insects, which accidentally found themselves there; there was a whole community of organisms capable of survival under such severe conditions. As can be seen from the study carried out by researchers and published in PubMed, the water in the Movile Cave contained sulfur, methane, and ammonia. All of these substances are toxic to ordinary flora and fauna. Nevertheless, certain microorganisms were found in the cave, actively thriving there.Chemistry rules everything insideThe most important process that allows the Movile Cave to survive is called chemosynthesis. As the process of photosynthesis does not take place due to the lack of light, certain microorganisms become the first producers. Microorganisms receive enough energy necessary for functioning as a result of the decay of toxic compounds in the water. As stated in the research of the ISME Journal, the scientists identified certain genes of sulfur-oxidising bacteria and archaea. The microorganisms create a biofilm covering the surface of the water. Thus, the biofilm can be viewed as grass in the cave, serving as the basis of the whole ecosystem. Moreover, the researchers established that energy sources for the cave come from certain nitrogen-fixing bacteria that destroy ammonia and nitrites. Thus, all these processes form one system creating energy by means of using the compounds of the Earth rather than the sunlight.
Subterranean fauna

Why was the cave hidden?Movile Cave stayed hidden all those years thanks to physical and chemical isolation from the outside world. Firstly, it lacks vertical caves and fissures that can lead to the surface. Secondly, water in Movile Cave comes from deep underground wells and not from rainfall.A study from Scientific Reports published in 2023 sheds light on the extent of sealing of this habitat. Scientists who tested water in Movile Cave discovered no presence of radioactive isotopes released after the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chornobyl. The absence of contamination was clear evidence that surface water did not get through to the underground world of Movile Cave. It is a true closed ecosystem, totally uninvolved in environmental events occurring on its surface.A sealed ecosystem with complex food websContrary to one's expectations, this unique ecosystem consists of much more than microscopic fungi and bacteria living in it. They serve as food for smaller cave creatures who are themselves preyed upon by other species residing there. Dozens of animal species, many found nowhere else, populate Movile Cave, among which blind spiders, water scorpions, centipedes, and leeches are especially notable. Having existed in the absence of light for millions of years, the creatures became many that are blind or reduced-eyed and lack pigmentation. At last, Movile Cave opened up new perspectives into life requirements on Earth. The cave continues to be an important place for microbiology, metabolism studies, and even space exploration. Scientists continue to conduct research in Movile Cave to study life on other planets. The cave is a testament to the fact that the Earth still has many secrets yet to be uncovered.
