Setback follows glimpses of triumph

Elon Musk's Starship rocket successfully launched from the company's Starbase launch site near Boca Chica in Texas, placing it into space. However, the spacecraft encountered a setback 8 minutes into the flight, experiencing a rapid unplanned disassembly.

Starship's critical destruction decision

SpaceX reported a loss of contact with the vehicle. They then had to activate the "flight termination system" of the Starship, a self-destruct feature employed to prevent the spacecraft from deviating off course.

Postponed launch of Spaceship

The launch was delayed by a day by SpaceX to replace one of Super Heavy's grid fins. These grid fins, shaped like waffle irons, assist the booster in maneuvering its way back to Earth following launch.

Starship's sequel after first attempt failed

Saturday's launch follows initial launch of the spacecraft in April, which had concluded in an explosion over the Gulf of Mexico. During the April launch, the two components, Super Heavy and Starship, experienced a failure to separate, resulting in Starship's inability to reach space.

First launch failure

During the first launch, SpaceX had to initiate the destruction of the Starship just four minutes into its test flight on April 20 due to the failure of the two stages to separate. The rocket disintegrated into a fiery ball and descended into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ambitious starship mission

The Starship, unmanned spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to the moon and beyond, was intended to perform a partial orbit around the Earth, nearly reaching orbital velocity, and then execute a belly flop maneuver into the Pacific Ocean close to Hawaii.

What makes up Starship?

The nearly 400-foot-tall (122 metres) vehicle comprises of two elements, both of which are designed to be fully and rapidly reusable — a first-stage booster called Super Heavy and 165-foot-tall (50 metres) upper stage known as Starship.

Most powerful rocket till date

The Starship is the most massive rocket ever constructed, designed with the aspiration of facilitating the colonization of Mars and the Moon. The Super Heavy booster generates a thrust of 74.3 meganewtons, nearly twice the power of NASA's Space Launch System, the world's second most powerful rocket.
