SpaceX Starship explodes: Big setback to Musk's spaceflight programme

SpaceX launched Starship rocket on Thursday, almost two months after a failed test scattered flaming debris over the Turks and Caicos. The 403-foot spacecraft lifted off from Texas, aiming to release mock satellites before re-entering over the Indian Ocean.

This test follows a similar failure two months ago, when Starship exploded over the Atlantic. SpaceX has since implemented upgrades to the fuel system and flight controls, yet challenges persist, emphasizing the complexity of developing a fully reusable spacecraft.

The test flight carried four dummy satellites meant to simulate future SpaceX Starlink deployments. However, due to Starship’s premature failure, they were never released, highlighting the challenges SpaceX faces in achieving consistent orbital success with the spacecraft.

Shortly after contact was lost, Starship exploded near the Bahamas, with debris lighting up the sky. Social media videos captured the dramatic fireball, drawing worldwide attention as SpaceX faced yet another failure in its attempt to perfect the spacecraft.

However, just minutes after liftoff, contact with the spacecraft was lost, leaving its fate uncertain and marking another setback in SpaceX’s ambitious space program. Though the first-stage booster was successfully caught by SpaceX’s mechanical arms at the launch site, the upper-stage Starship encountered issues.

Initial findings suggested that a fuel leak led to engine shutdowns mid-flight, causing the spacecraft to lose control. As a safety measure, the onboard self-destruct system was triggered, repeating a pattern seen in previous test failures.

Following the explosion, the FAA halted flights at major Florida airports, including Miami and Orlando, due to potential space debris hazards. This disruption showcased the broader impact of Starship’s failure beyond the aerospace industry.
