About Sant Guru Ravidas
As per history, Guru Ravidas was born during 1377 C.E. at Mandhuadhe in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Many believe that Guru Ravidas was born on Magha Purnima. Hence, his birth anniversary is celebrated on Magha Purnima as per Hindu lunar calendar. His birthplace is now known as Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan and it is a major place of pilgrimage for the followers of Guru Ravidas.


Meanwhile, the Delhi government has declared February 16 as public holiday. "Delhi government has announced a public holiday on the occasion of Ravidas Jayanti (February 16)," Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal posted on his official twitter handle.


February 16 is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Saint Ravidas, a 15th to 16th century CE Guru who worked for the eradication of caste system and rights of the untouchable. He is the founder of Ravidassia sect among Sikhs. Saint Ravidas has a sizeable population of followers in the poll bound state of Punjab.
