Gangaur Vrat 2023: Gangaur is a religious festival dedicated to Goddess Gauri, who is known as Parvati and the consort of Lord Shiva. This festival is also known as Gauri Tritiya as this falls on Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra. This festival is mainly celebrated in the states of Rajasthan with great grandeur. Married women observe fast on this day and pray for the wellbeing of their husbands and unmarried women also keep fast to seek blessings from Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva to get a desired husband. This vibrant festival of Gangaur is being celebrated today, on March 24, 2023.

Gangaur Vrat 2023: Story
According to the Hindu scriptures, one day Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva went to forest accompanied by Narada Muni. The people who lived in the forest got happy and excited to see Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati together. Women offered food to them and Pleased tried to please them, Goddess Parvati blessed those women and sprinkled suhagras (shringar items) on them for their long and happy married life.

When the other women of the village came with the food they had prepared, Gauri had already finished all the suhagras (Shringar Items). Seeing this, Lord Shiva smiled and asked Gauri what will she do now. Goddess Parvati smiled and replied that she will bless these women with her own blood. She then scratched the tip of her finger and sprinkled the blood on these women and blessed them with marital bliss.

Gangaur Vrat 2023: Pooja Rituals
1. On this day, women wake up early, take bathe and worship the clay deities.

2. They light a diya with desi ghee, offer flowers, vermillion and sweets.

3. Women apply mehendi on their palms and feets and wear beautiful clothes and jwellery.

4. Girls and women dress up the idols, married women carry Goddess Gauri’s idol on their heads and sing departure songs in the procession held during auspicious hours.

5. Bridegroom-Shankara accompanies his bride Devi Parvati to heaven. A teary farewell is given by devotees, hoping to celebrate Gangaur with more vigour and grandeur coming year

Gangaur Vrat 2023: Celebration

This festival has a great significance among women. Women apply mehendi on hands and feet and this is a part of the traditional festival. They prepare homemade Ghevar, kheer, barfi, and multiple other savouries and sweet snacks. This festival is celebrated by offering variety of food items to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. After offering different varieties of food to Goddess Parvati, women distribute sweets and bhog prasad to all the family members, friends and relatives.
