Indian cricketers who had a strained relationship with their fathers

In India, cricket is not just a sport-- it's a religion. And while many dream of becoming a cricketer one day, only a few are able to achieve this dream. However, behind the glamour of being a professional cricketer there are years of relentless hard work and sacrifices. For some, there are raw family dramas, where their dads pile sky-high pressure on them to chase glory or equations change when they earn fame. Here we list some Indian cricketers who have strained relationships with their fathers. These tales warn parents: Push too hard, lose the child. Beyond boundaries, they humanise icons, proving resilience forges champions.

Yuvraj Singh and Yograj Singh: Coach over father

Yuvraj Singh's bond with his dad Yograj—a 1980s Punjab Ranji player—cracked under brutal training. Yograj, living vicariously, drilled Yuvraj from age 3: Endless nets, no mercy. Yuvraj has shared that he felt like a project, not a son to his father. At 17, he fled to his mom Shabnam's home and cut ties with his father for many years. In his 2014 book 'The Test of My Life', Yuvraj spilled, "He was my coach, not dad." Cancer battle forced reflection; partial mends followed, but scars linger. Yuvraj's 2011 World Cup heroics are proof that he outgrew the parental pressure.

Sanjay Manjrekar and Vijay Manjrekar: A life of fear

Sanjay Manjrekar, ex-India batter and commentator, grew up dreading his father Vijay, who was a 1960s Test star with 17 centuries. Vijay's mantra for his son was: Perfection or silence. No praise, just critiques. In his 2018 autobiography 'Imperfect' and earlier interviews, Sanjay had recalled having zero warmth from his father. He described his father as "disturbed, frustrated, angry". Sanjay also shared that their meals together were formal, they had cricket-only talks, and fear ruled their home. "I had no relationship with my father to speak of," Sanjay once said, reported cricketcountry.com in 2018. But, it seems that when Sanjay became a dad, fatherhood flipped him—he was more acceptig and kind to his kids, as compared to his own father. "I'm happy that both my children have nothing to do with cricket" Sanjay once said in 2018 interviews, showsing his deliberate choice to avoid repeating his father's intense coaching and strict parenting.

Ravindra Jadeja and Anirudh Singh: Public family feud

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's 2024 saga erupted when his dad Anirudhsinh Jadeja—a watchman by trade—aired grievances: His daughter-in-law Rivaba "controls" him, post-wedding ignored family, no visits or contact with grandkids. "I have absolutely no relation with Ravindra and his wife, Rivaba. We don't call them, and they don't call us,” Anirudhsinh had told Divya Bhaskar in an interview. Anirudhsinh claimed penury, living off late wife's INR 20,000 pension. Ravindra Jadeja fired back on Instagram, calling it "Rubbish and false". Roots trace to Jadeja's rise: Anirudhsinh pushed Ravindra to become a cricketer after his wife (Ravindra's mom's) death, but it seems Ravindra's success bred distance between them. Rivaba's political entry further fueled their family rifts.

These raw confessions remind us that cricket glory demands heart, but family wars leave deeper scars. What are your views on it? Tell us in the comments below.
