Planning to quit your job? 5 things you should do first

The burnout is getting the best of you. Or perhaps you are fed up with office politics. Maybe you feel underpaid and undervalued. Whatever the reason, the urge to quit can be overwhelming. But before you sign that resignation paper, take a moment to prepare. Here are five important things you should know before making that decision.

2/7

Differentiate your job from your purpose

For decades, motivational authors have sold us the same narrative – find your passion and do what you love. Regardless of how wonderful it sounds, it is not always realistic. But most people end up believing that narrative and expect the job to fulfil them. That’s where the real trouble begins. But here’s what you need to know – not every job needs to be your life’s purpose. It is okay to choose jobs that provide you with financial stability until you figure out your next move. So, stop expecting your job to fulfil you.

3/7

You are beyond your title

If nobody has told you yet, here’s a reality check. You are more than your job title. Sure, the CFO nameplate on your desk looks amazing. But your worth is not tied to your job title. You are not your position, your salary, or your performance reviews. Your value extends far beyond what you accomplish at your workplace. When you separate your self-worth from your work, you will start to enjoy your life more and stop taking professional setbacks personally. You may have received a poor performance review this quarter, but that does not take away from the fact that you are an incredible individual, partner, or parent. It does not diminish your ability to make your loved ones happy. So, stop tying your worth to your job title.

4/7

Curate small things that are just yours

One way to escape the worries of your work is to have time of your own. Until you figure out your next move, create tiny anchors throughout your day that have nothing to do with work. For instance, a meaningful morning routine, such as a walk outside. Or perhaps a playlist just for your commute. A hobby you have been meaning to start. Anything. These small moments will give you something to look forward to and also help you discover who you are beyond work.

5/7

Explore your options while still employed

If you are clear that quitting is the best option, go ahead. But before you quit, start exploring your options. Take that online course you have been meaning to take since the beginning. Go for a coffee with a peer from the field you have been curious about. Try to see if freelancing suits you. Working while you explore gives you a safety net. It also gives you the time to think and gather real-world information about what you might want to do next.

6/7

Build a life beyond your job

Regardless of how much you love or hate your job, you should have a life outside it. Build a life beyond work. Have real friends. Set time aside for meaningful hobbies. Work out for your body and mind. Have creative pursuits. When your sense of purpose, community, and joy come from multiple sources, you are less vulnerable to the ups and downs of work.

7/7

What you should know

After considering all these factors, you can make an informed decision on whether or not to quit. Remember that you are allowed to change direction. So even if you stay now, it does not mean you are there forever. Take time to prepare. Gain clarity. Build your foundation. And then decide, with confidence, what comes next.
