new delhi: the railways would run a special train from here to gwalior on wednesday for those wishing to attend the funeral of senior congress leader madhavrao scindia there on that day, railway minister nitish kumar announced on monday. presiding over a condolence meeting, organised by the ministry at rail bhavan, nitish kumar also announced cancellation of all functions and celebrations by the railways for a week as a mark of respect to scindia, who had headed the ministry in the 1980s.
the condolence meeting was attended by ministers of state for railways o rajagopal and digvijay singh besides ministry staff. nitish kumar said scindia's tenure was the golden era for the railways when he brought about large-scale modernisation, launched the prestigious superfast shatabdi express trains, introduced computerised passenger reservation system and new trends in in-train catering to improve the public image of the railways. the minister said the guna-etawah rail line was the dream project of scindia. a lot of work on this project had been done, he added. "nothing can be a better tribute to the departed soul than the early completition of this project," he added.
