Why the Little Rann of Kutch is Gujarat’s best-kept secret

The Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat is often overshadowed by the more famous Great Rann of Kutch, known for its gleaming white salt desert and the grand Rann Utsav. Yet, the Little Rann holds its own as a destination that combines wilderness, culture, and striking landscapes. This salt marsh is not just a barren stretch of land but a living, breathing ecosystem that supports unique wildlife and age-old communities. For travellers who wish to look beyond the obvious and discover something raw, authentic, and unforgettable, the Little Rann of Kutch is a true hidden gem. Here are five reasons that make it so special.

2/6

The Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary

Just like us, if you are also forever in love with all things rare and beautiful, the Little Rann of Kutch is just the perfect destination. The greatest highlight of the Little Rann is the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, established to protect one of the rarest animals in the world—the Indian Wild Ass, or khur. You will not find them anywhere else. This hardy species has adapted to the harsh conditions of the salt desert and roams the plains in herds. A jeep safari is the best way to explore the desert and spot these beautiful animals. The jeeps maintain proper distance away from the herds so that the animals don’t get disturbed. Watch them gallop across the salt flat, it’s unforgettable.

3/6

A birdwatcher’s paradise

The Little Rann of Kutch may be dry and barren for most of the year, but come monsoon, the landscape transforms into a bird paradise. The monsoons transform parts of the landscape into wetlands, which in return, draw thousands of migratory birds, making it one of India’s best birdwatching destinations. Visit between November and February to see the dramatic transformation with flamingos, pelicans, demoiselle cranes, painted storks all around. LRK is a great site to spot raptors such as eagles and harriers.

4/6

Otherworldly landscape

The Little Rann’s terrain is full of surprises. At first glance, the salt desert seems lifeless, with its cracked earth, salty crusts, and endless horizons. A bird or two here and there, and miles of nothingness. But pay a little more attention and you will start to see the beauty of it. This starkness is even refreshing, as some would say, being so different from the usual hustle and bustle of the cities or towns. For photography enthusiasts, LRK is no less than a gorgeous painting, especially in the evenings. The sky explodes into hues of orange, pink, and gold.

5/6

Gateway to Gujarat’s heritage trail

The Little Rann of Kutch is ideally located for those who wish to combine natural exploration with cultural heritage. A short drive away from LRK, you will find some of the best and most iconic landmarks in Gujarat. For instance, the Modhera Sun Temple is just 121 km away from LRK. The sun temple is one of the very few sun temples in India. Patan, another nearby city, located just 116 km away from LRK, is home to Rani ki Vav, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as one of the finest stepwells in the world.

6/6

Culture and craft of local communities

The Little Rann is not just about wilderness and desert—it is also home to tribal communities that have lived here for centuries. The Rabari and Bharwad communities, among others, inhabit the villages around the Rann and have developed vibrant cultural traditions that continue to thrive today. When visiting LRK, make use of your time to interact with these communities, and learn about their nomadic lifestyles, animal husbandry, and traditional crafts. Speaking of crafts, the embroidery, beadwork, and mirror-work of the Rabari women are especially admired, and make for great souvenirs.
