Snow guaranteed! Top 5 destinations to visit in January for 2026 winter fun

January is one of the best months to witness snowfall in India. It is the peak winter time which brings very heavy snow to heavy snow in high-altitude Himalayan destinations. It turns that part of the country into a snow wonderland. The mountains, the valleys, the meadows all shine like crushed white diamonds!

While there is no 100% guaranteed snow anywhere (because things depend on weather ultimately which is unpredictable mostly). However, there are places where snow in January is likely due to altitude and climate. On this note, let’s have a look at five such places in India that consistently deliver a snowy experience in January.

Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir

India’s winter wonderland, Gulmarg generally experiences snowfall in January making it a paradise for snow lovers. Set in the Himalayas at an elevation of 2,650 m, Gulmarg receives heavy snowfall throughout the month. The place is also known for being home to one of the world’s highest cable car systems — the Gulmarg Gondola. As per local reports, the early winter snow has already started in the region.

Auli, Uttarakhand

Auli is India’s Skiing Capital and experiences heavy snow in the month of January. The beautiful resort town in Uttarakhand is set at 2,800 m and offers one of the best natural ski slopes in the country. December and January are the best months to enjoy snow adventures here. Snowfall peaks around this month in the Garhwal Himalayas.

Sonamarg and Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir

Sonamarg and Pahalgam are two other beautiful destinations, where people can enjoy snow activities. The snowy landscapes in January are absolutely heart-warming! Both the places are set at high altitudes and are known for their vast snow-covered valleys and pine forests. During this time, Sonamarg turns into a frozen heaven and Pahalgam turns all white and dreamy. These regions are much quieter than the overcrowded Gulmarg.

Lachung & Yumthang Valley, Sikkim

Lachung and the Yumthang Valley in Sikkim—often referred to as the North East’s snow kingdom—also witness heavy snowfall in January. Yumthang, popularly known as the “Valley of Flowers,” transforms into a pristine white landscape during winter, with snow covering the valley for months. Located at elevations above 3,000 metres in the high Himalayas, these regions are regularly draped in snow. While the journey to reach them can be demanding due to weather and terrain, the breathtaking winter views make the effort worthwhile.

Kufri, Himachal Pradesh

Kufri is another high-altitude destination near Shimla which experiences snowfall in the month of January. Like almost guaranteed! Chances of spotting snow in Kufri is higher, making it a must visit for snow lovers. You can enjoy snow activities such as sledging and snowball fights, among others.
