India’s most beautiful and iconic train routes perfect for slow travellers

India has one of the largest and most varied railway networks in the world, but beyond that, there is something far more fascinating—the potential to turn a means of transport into a destination in itself. In India, trains traverse a variety of landscapes that change dramatically in a matter of hours—from snow-clad Himalayan mountainsides and tea garden country to rainforests, sun-kissed coasts, and arid desertscapes. These are not rushed journeys, but leisurely ones, allowing travelers to observe daily life, change of terrain, and cultural evolution from a convenient seat by a window.

Many of these routes are achievements in railway engineering, built either during colonial times or through some of the most challenging terrain in the country. Some are famous for their seasonal appeal, changing almost beyond recognition in the monsoon or winter months.

Kalka–Shimla Railway

A masterpiece in mountain rail engineering, the Kalka-Shimla Railway is as much about nostalgia as it is about scenic beauty. The railway, which connects the plains to the popular hill station Shimla, chugs steadily through dense pine forests, mist-shrouded valleys, and picturesque villages in the hills. The journey, which covers over 100 tunnels and more than 800 bridges, includes several elegant arches, which have stood the test of time. What makes this railway journey special is that it’s done in no hurry. As the train winds through the mountains, one gets to see changing vistas – deep gorges, dense forests, and rolling hills.

3/8

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of the most iconic train rides one can take in India. The train passes through the misty hills of West Bengal and passes through many picturesque towns and mountainous landscapes. The most popular attraction of the train is the Batasia Loop, which is a circular track on which the train runs, giving a bird's eye view of the hills and on clear days, the majestic Kanchenjunga range. The uniqueness of this train ride lies in the fact that it passes very close to many homes and towns, giving one the feeling of being a part of the scenery.

4/8

Konkan Railways

Extending over the western coast of India, the Konkan Railway traverses one of the most beautiful railway routes in the country. The railway passes through Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. The railway crosses the Western Ghats and rivers and even offers views of the Arabian Sea. The beauty of this journey is even more mesmerizing during the monsoon. The Western Ghats look emerald green in color. Waterfalls can be seen in abundance.

5/8

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a journey into the heart of South India’s hill country. The train route is between Mettupalayam and Ooty. The train is known for its blue coaches and rack and pinion system, which enable the train to climb hills. As the train climbs, the scenery changes from a tropical plain to a cool, misty hill station with tea estates and eucalyptus groves. The train goes through tunnels, over bridges, and along deep valleys, and the views are breathtaking. The chugging of the train and the mountain air make this a sensory experience.

6/8

Jammu–Baramulla Line

The railway line between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley is one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. It passes through the toughest geography of the Himalayas, with many tunnels and bridges, including the famous Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge in the world. The scenery of the journey includes the breathtaking sights of the Himalayan peaks, valleys, and rivers. In the winters, the scenery resembles a white wonderland, while the beauty of greenery can be seen during the spring and summer seasons.

7/8

Mumbai–Goa Route

The train journey from Mumbai to Goa, particularly in the Mandovi Express, is a treat for the eyes as one can enjoy the scenic beauty of both beaches and mountain ranges. The train chugs through the Western Ghats, passing through dense forests, winding rivers, and rolling hills. The highlight of this train journey is passing through the Dudhsagar waterfalls, which looks particularly beautiful during the monsoon season when water is in full flow. The picture of the train passing through this place, with mist coming out from waterfalls, is one of the most iconic scenes in India.

8/8

Jaisalmer Railway Route

If one wants to see completely different kinds of beauty, then the train journey to Jaisalmer will take one to the heart of the Thar Desert. Unlike the lush railway routes in Western Ghats or Himalayas, the beauty of this railway route in the desert is in simplicity. Endless stretches of golden sand, scattered shrubs, and the occasional camel caravan give the scene a somewhat cinematic feel. The beauty of the desert route lies in the sunrise or sunset, when the desert takes on hues of gold or amber. Scenic beauty does not have to mean greenery; at times, it lies in simplicity.
