From Spiti to Antarctica: World's most unusual post offices every traveller should visit

In an age of instant messaging, postcards feel like antiques, but in some parts of the world, sending them is still a fun way to remember a trip. You've got post offices up high in the mountains, down underwater, and spots that stamp your card in such a special way, collectors go wild for it. For folks who bring back tales instead of trinkets, here are five places showing that a postcard's journey can be amazing, much like your adventure.

Hikkim, India: World's highest post office

Perched atop Spiti Valley's rugged peaks lies the teeny village of Hikkim, which gained worldwide recognition for its extraordinary post office. At roughly 4,440 meters above sea level, this post office boasts the title of being the world’s highest. While the structure looks simple, its allure isn't just ordinary. People travel long distances to stop by, carrying postcards and eager to mark them there. After collecting the unique post office stamp, the cards embark on an adventure through India's remotest postal system. So, not only is it a humble space, but it kicks off some pretty memorable mail journeys too.

Antarctica: Penguin posts and more

Antarctica is about as remote as it gets, making a postcard from there super special. At Port Lockroy on the Antarctic Peninsula, folks can send mail at one of the world's southernmost post offices. It's run out of a former British research station surrounded by amazing views—glaciers, icebergs, and gentoo penguin colonies. Tourists usually head straight for the tiny gift shop and the postal counter. After getting stamped with a unique Antarctic cancellation mark, those letters might take weeks or even months to arrive.

4/6

Sabarmati Ashram, India: Rare Charkha cancellation stamp

A lot of travellers go to Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to learn about Mahatma Gandhi and India's fight for freedom. But what many don't know is that the place has a cool, unique postal thing going on. Inside the ashram, there's a post office using a special cancellation stamp shaped like a charkha, or spinning wheel. This spinning wheel? It was super important during India's independence movement and represented Gandhi's ideas about being self-reliant. People can even buy postcards there, get them stamped with this neat symbol, and mail them from right inside the ashram.

5/6

Hideaway Island, Vanuatu: Underwater post office

Most post offices just need a quick walk, but this one? You need a snorkel. Off Hideaway Island in Vanuatu, lies the world's first underwater post office. A few meters below the ocean's surface, people can swim down to drop mail in the submerged mailbox. They use special waterproof postcards for this adventure. After being collected, the cards are stamped with a unique underwater cancellation mark before entering the conventional postal system.

6/6

Santa Claus Village, Finland: Letter from the Arctic Circle

The post office in Santa Claus Village, Rovaniemi, Finland, is super unique. Nestled right on the Arctic Circle, it gets swamped with letters for Santa each year. Visitors can get postcards stamped with a special Arctic Circle mark, making them extra special. The coolest part? You can send letters for future Christmas delivery. People there during summertime can even schedule their mail to reach folks in December. So you get this awesome winter-themed surprise way after it was sent.
