America’s secret Serengeti: Wildlife drives you didn’t know existed in the US

Africa mostly takes the limelight whenever “wildlife safari” is talked about, where lions nap under acacia trees and zebras strut around. But if you are in the US, you can have the same fun and spot herds of majestic animals from your car window. Welcome to America’s secret Serengeti, where the bison roam, the elk bugle, and the antelope play. (Canva)

2/7

Custer State Park, South Dakota

It’s South Dakota’s first and largest state park, tucked into the Black Hills. It’s home to one of the largest publicly-owned bison herds in the world. We’re talking about 1,300 beefy, shaggy majesty crossing the road. Drive the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road, and prepare for bison-induced traffic jams, and elk casually relaxing. (Canva)

3/7

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma

Oklahoma isn’t usually first on a wildlife lover’s bucket list, which is exactly why Wichita Mountains feel like a glorious secret. This granite-studded refuge is crawling (and galloping) with bison, Texas longhorns, prairie dogs, and the occasional golden eagle doing a fly-by.
The scenic drive through the refuge winds past rugged hills and open plains, and you’ll probably share the road with more four-legged locals than tourists. Bonus points for the Mount Scott summit drive, the view comes with a side of wild beauty. (Canva)

4/7

National Bison Range, Montana

Head to Montana’s National Bison Range for an adventure trip. The 19-mile Red Sleep Mountain Drive takes you up, down, and all around a gorgeous landscape dotted with bison, elk, deer, and even the occasional bear cameo. It's the closest thing to a Wild West safari, minus the stagecoach ambush. (Canva)

5/7

Antelope Island State Park, Utah

Smack dab in the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island sounds like a fantasy setting, and it sort of is. Bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope (surprise!), and coyotes roam the stark, otherworldly terrain like they’re starring in their own slow-mo nature documentary.
The roads here are peaceful, scenic, and a photographer’s dream — especially at golden hour, when the whole lake shimmers like a mirage. It’s salty, it’s surreal, and it’s surprisingly full of wildlife. (Canva)

6/7

Alligator Alley, Florida

If you like your wildlife drives with a side of adventure, Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park have you covered. Cruise Loop Road, a backcountry stretch off Tamiami Trail, and you’ll spot gators sunbathing in ditches. Herons, egrets, and the occasional python add to the cast of wildlife. It’s humid, it’s haunting, and it feels like Jurassic Park.(Canva)

7/7

Bosque del Apache, New Mexico

This one’s for the bird nerds. Every fall and winter, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge becomes a feathery frenzy, as thousands of sandhill cranes, snow geese, and ducks arrive in a noisy, flappy cloud.
Drive the 12-mile loop through the refuge for front-row seats to nature’s most chaotic air show. Pro tip: go at sunrise or sunset for that golden light and serious avian drama. (Canva)
