5 things that make Kashmir a great March destination

March in Kashmir is not just about sightseeing, it’s about witnessing a seasonal shift. The winter chill is calmer, the days are sunny and bright, nature is waking up from the winter slumber, and there is refreshing beauty all around. From the reopening of the tulip garden to the revival of Mughal gardens like Nishat Bagh, from blossoming almond trees to comfortable daytime temperatures, the valley begins to rediscover its colour and vibrancy. The daytime temperature is comfortably cool, and this means a lot of sight-seeing. So if you think you deserve a break after the rough winter, Kashmir might just be that magical place for you.
March is a month when winter loosens its grip and spring quietly takes over, making it one of the most rewarding times to experience Kashmir’s natural and cultural beauty.

2/6

Reopening of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden

One of the biggest highlights of visiting Kashmir in March is the reopening of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, towards the end of March (third week). The garden stays open for a month. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is recognised as the largest tulip garden in Asia, as it is spread across the foothills of the Zabarwan Range. The garden features over a million tulip bulbs in multiple varieties and vibrant colours, and overlooks the stunning Dal Lake. The Kashmir valley is spectacular this time of year, and you do not want to miss it.

3/6

The beauty of spring at Nishat Bagh

March is a beautiful time to visit Nishat Bagh, one of the most famous Mughal gardens in Kashmir. This stunning garden was built in 1633 by Asif Khan, brother of Empress Nur Jahan. It is also known as the “Garden of Bliss.” The garden features 12 terraced levels representing the zodiac signs. Why is March special? This is the time when the chinar trees begin to show fresh foliage, flower beds are prepared for spring blooms, and the flowing water channels fed by mountain streams add to the charm. Also, the backdrop of snow-capped peaks combined with early blossoms, is just magical.

4/6

Pleasant and comfortable weather

March offers one of the most balanced climates in the Kashmir Valley. March is when the daytime temperatures in Srinagar generally range between 10°C and 18°C, a perfect combination of mountain chill and the sun’s gentle warmth. Look up and you will see clear skies and crisp air, making it perfect for walking tours, sightseeing, and photography.

5/6

Almond blossoms and seasonal transition

March marks the arrival of spring blossoms across the valley. Japan may have sakura, but Kashmir has almond, apricot and cherry blossoms, especially in Badamwari and other parts in and around Srinagar. By now, the snow has also started to melt at lower altitudes, feeding streams and rivers. With the gentle rise in temperature, the wetlands will also start to attract migratory birds.

6/6

Fewer tourists and peaceful experiences

March is considered the shoulder season in Kashmir. So this means that the tourist numbers are lower compared to peak summer months. The accommodation options, including houseboats on Dal Lake, are now easier to book since there is no rush as such. With tourist attractions less crowded this time of year, this means that one can go for relaxed, unhurried exploration of the tourist sites. Visitors who prefer serenity over peak-season hustle often find March to be an ideal time.
