Just 5 days after launch, Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) records over 25,000 passengers footfall
A new chapter began in India’s aviation industry on December 25, 2025 with the inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) in Maharashtra. India’s latest aviation sensation, developed by Adani Airports, has recorded a strong presence in just five days since its opening by catering to over 25,000 passengers.
The footfall figures are quite impressive and signal strong travel demand in the region. As per reports, 26,021 passengers (roughly 12,431 arrivals and 13,590 departures) have already travelled between December 25 and 30 from NMIA. Some 5,500 passengers travelled only on the weekend. In total, NMIA handled 162 air traffic movements.
Not one but many airlines were behind this record and strong start. On the first day, the airport managed 48 scheduled flights, serving passengers on domestic routes operated by major airlines including IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air. On day four, the numbers crossed 21,000 passengers.
Located in Ulwe-Panvel, the main motive to build NMIA was to relieve congestion at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai. NMIA marks a transformative moment for India’s aviation industry, emerging as a long-awaited second gateway to Mumbai. The airport aims to serve up to 90 million passengers a year in future.
The airport, in Kharghar region, is packed with all modern state-of-the-art infrastructure to enhance passenger experience. It is all set to boost regional connectivity, travel, trade, and tourism supporting rapid growth of the state.
Better connectivity for both regional, domestic and international travellers
Expanded travel options
Reduced pressure on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA)
Future international connectivity, expected as the terminal and runway infrastructure develops
While direct metro or dedicated express rail links are still under development, existing rail, local buses, and road networks are allowing easy access to passengers. Meanwhile, the strong initial traffic numbers look promising. With air travel demand rising every year in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, this new facility could play an important role in India’s travel evolution.
