Natural phenomena around the world worth travelling for

Our planet Earth is a stage for nature’s most spectacular performances, from vibrant migrations to otherworldly landscapes that seem too good to be true most of the time. These natural phenomena are often fleeting and tied to specific seasons or places, offering travelers a chance to witness the planet’s raw beauty. Here’s a list of some of the most awe-inspiring natural events worth travelling to experience.

2/8

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights – Norway, Iceland, Canada

Easily one of the most spectacular natural phenomena is the Northern Lights, an otherworldly display of neon green, pink, and blue lights dancing across the night sky. These lights occur when solar particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere, and they are best seen in winter months in places like Tromsø, Norway, Iceland’s remote regions, and the great expanses of Canada. An experience to remember for the rest of your life, the photo-ops that the Northern Lights give, are simply out of this world.

3/8

Monarch butterfly migration – Mexico and California

Every winter, from November to March, millions of monarch butterflies migrate 3,000 miles from Canada to Mexico’s Michoacán forests, blanketing trees in vibrant orange. If insects don’t creep you out, this experience is a must, at least once in a lifetime. To get the best of this experience, visit the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve or California’s Santa Cruz.

4/8

Sandhill crane migration – Nebraska, USA

Love birds? Or to be more specific, love cranes? Then this one is for you. Each March, over half a million sandhill cranes come to Nebraska’s Platte River. With the number so great, the sight is unforgettable. The Iain Nicolson Audubon Center offers guided tours to visitors and birdwatchers for this epic migration.

5/8

Firefall at Horsetail Falls – Yosemite, USA

For a few weeks in mid-February, Yosemite’s Horsetail Falls glows like molten lava at sunset. But this occurs only when conditions align, such as ample water, clear skies, and precise sunlight angles. You have to be one lucky visitor or a photographer to witness and photograph this particular natural phenomenon. Visit El Capitan’s eastern edge for this fleeting, fiery illusion, and hope that there is no rainfall.

6/8

Great wildebeest migration – Serengeti, TanzaniaKenya

Have you heard of the Great Migration in the Serengeti? From July to October, over 1.5 million wildebeest, alongside zebras and gazelles, travel the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem in a dramatic migration. The iconic river crossings at the Mara River, where the wildebeest and zebras brave crocodile-infested waters is an experience that will leave you terrified and in awe at the same time.

7/8

Red crab migration – Christmas Island, Australia

From October to December, millions of red crabs scuttle from Christmas Island’s forests to the ocean to breed. This migration is triggered by the wet season’s first rains. Roads and beaches and everywhere you look become a crimson carpet, with “crab bridges” aiding their journey.

8/8

Polar night and midnight sun – Svalbard, Norway

In Svalbard, experience the polar night (November to January), when the sun never rises, casting an ethereal blue twilight, or the midnight sun (April to August), where daylight persists 24/7.
