In photos: 7 things about Grand Canyon that makes it so iconic

The Grand Canyon, located in northwestern Arizona, USA, is easily one of the most revered natural wonders on Earth. It is celebrated for its breathtaking scale, geological significance, and cultural history. No wonder, nearly 6 million visitors visit the Grand Canyon annually. From the spiritual reverence of Indigenous peoples to the thrill of a rafting trip through its meandering rivers, there’s something for everyone. Here are seven things about the Grand Canyon that makes it so iconic.

2/8

Grand Canyon’s scale and grandeur

Immense is the word that comes to mind when one thinks about the Grand Canyon. It is 277 miles long (446 km), up to 18 miles (29 km) wide, and over a mile(1.8 km) deep—making it one of the largest canyons on Earth. From viewpoints like Mather Point or Yavapai Point on the South Rim, visitors can get a great view of the endless expanse of layered cliffs, mesas (flat-topped hills), and buttes (isolated hills with steep, vertical sides).

3/8

Geological time capsule

When you are looking at the Grand Canyon, you are looking at something that has a history that goes back nearly 2 billion years. Its exposed rock layers are a chronological record of geological processes, with the deepest layers, like the Vishnu Schist, dating back to the Precambrian era. The uppermost Kaibab Limestone is 270 million years old, a ‘young one’ in this case. The canyon was carved by the Colorado River over 5-6 million years ago, and still reveals evidence of ancient oceans, deserts, and tectonic shifts. Fossils, we are talking about fossils!

4/8

UNESCO World Heritage Status

In 1979, the Grand Canyon was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation also meant conservation efforts to protect its pristine landscapes and scientific value. For visitors, the UNESCO label also means that the canyon is a treasure worthy of international protection and admiration.

5/8

Cultural and historical importance

The Grand Canyon is far more than a natural wonder; it’s a sacred and historical place for Native American tribes. For these communities, the canyon is a spiritual homeland. So many stories of creation and ceremonial practices come from the communities. And in the midst of it all, one finds the majestic Grand Canyon. Archaeological sites, such as ancient granaries, petroglyphs, and pueblo ruins, reveal centuries of human presence.

6/8

Diverse ecosystems

Did you know that the Grand Canyon hosts five distinct ecological zones? These range from desert scrub along the Colorado River to boreal forests at higher elevations, supporting a number of wildlife, some endemic and rare. Here you will find endangered species like the California condor, bighorn sheep, and the unique Grand Canyon pink rattlesnake.

7/8

Adventure and recreation opportunities

Iconic trails like Bright Angel and South Kaibab lead hikers into the canyon’s depths, while the challenging rim-to-rim trek is a bucket-list achievement for seasoned trekkers. White-water rafting on the Colorado River is another popular adventure activity. One can go for mule rides to Phantom Ranch, helicopter tours for aerial views, and stargazing under some of the darkest skies.

8/8

Cinematic and artistic inspiration

The Grand Canyon’s dramatic vistas have long inspired artists, filmmakers, and photographers, embedding it in global culture. The canyon was featured in movies like Thelma & Louise, The Lion King. Photographers flock to spots like Hopi Point for iconic sunsets.
