From Kannauj to Cologne: Historic cities from around the world famous for perfumes

Across the world, a handful of cities have risen above others to become true capitals of fragrance, places where scents are not merely crafted but are a part of the cultural, economic, and historical fabric of daily life. These destinations have shaped the evolution of perfumery for centuries. Their bustling markets, riverfront workshops, medieval guilds, and royal patronage all contributed to the creation of iconic scents that still influence modern perfumers. From ancient distillation hubs along trade routes to European towns that transformed perfume into both an art and a science, these cities have left an indelible mark on the global fragrance landscape.

2/11

Kannauj, India

Kannauj has been the heart of India’s perfumery tradition for centuries. The city is best known for attars, natural oil-based perfumes distilled using age-old techniques in copper degs (stills). Rose, jasmine, marigold, vetiver and even “mitti attar,” which captures the smell of the first monsoon rain on dry earth, are among its most iconic creations. Walking through Kannauj’s narrow alleys, visitors can see traditional perfumers at work.

3/11

Grasse, France

Located in the hills of the French Riviera, Grasse is synonymous with luxury perfumery. It emerged as a global hub in the 17th and 18th centuries when glove-makers began scenting leather with local flowers. Today, Grasse is home to legendary fragrance houses and fields full of May rose, jasmine, lavender, and tuberose. Visitors can tour historic factories such as Fragonard, Galimard and Molinard, and participate in perfume-making workshops.

4/11

Cologne, Germany

The German city of Cologne gave the world one of its most famous fragrance categories: Eau de Cologne. In the early 18th century, Italian-born perfumer Johann Maria Farina created a refreshing citrus-based scent inspired by Italy’s blooming landscapes and named it after his new home—Köln (Cologne).

5/11

Cairo, Egypt

Egypt’s association with perfume goes back thousands of years, to a time when fragrance was essential to rituals, royalty, and medicine. Cairo continues that legacy through bustling perfume bazaars filled with lotus, musk, amber, sandalwood and jasmine oils. Artisans here frequently claim lineage to ancient perfumers who supplied essences to temples and pharaohs.

6/11

Istanbul, Türkiye

Straddling Europe and Asia, Istanbul has been a fragrant melting pot for centuries. During the Ottoman Empire, the city became renowned for rosewater, oud, amber, and exotic spice-based scents. These aromatic traditions came from Persia, Arabia, and the Mediterranean, giving rise to a rich perfume culture. The Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market continue to be treasure troves for fragrance lovers. If you are visiting these grand old souks, pick yourself a souvenir or two.

7/11

Florence, Italy

Florence has a long history of perfumery intertwined with the Renaissance and the Medici dynasty. Santa Maria Novella, founded by Dominican monks in the early 13th century, is one of the world’s oldest functioning pharmacies and perfumeries, producing floral waters, colognes, and soaps using traditional recipes.

8/11

Damascus, Syria

Despite its turbulent recent history, Damascus has a deep-rooted perfume heritage centred around the legendary Damask rose. For centuries, this fragrant flower has been distilled into rosewater and oils used in perfumes, cuisine, and ceremonies. Damascus was once an important point on the ancient trade routes that spread Middle Eastern scents to Europe and Asia. Even today, the city’s traditional perfumers produce attars and rose-based formulations that continue this storied legacy.

9/11

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech enchants travellers with its sensory overload, from bustling souks to stalls overflowing with orange blossom, musk, cedarwood, and saffron. Moroccan perfumery blends Andalusian, Berber and Arabic influences. Perfumers in Medina still make solid perfumes, essential oils, and botanical blends using techniques that have been passed down for generations.

10/11

Hyderabad, India

If the north has Kannauj, then the south also has Hyderabad. The city of Hyderabad has its own perfumery culture rooted in the Nizam era. The city is famed for oudh, khus, musk, and rose-based attars, many traditionally worn during royal ceremonies. Old quarters like Begum Bazaar still house perfumers who create handcrafted, oil-based fragrances that echo the opulence of Hyderabad’s royal past.

11/11

Paris, France

While Grasse is the source of raw materials, Paris has long been the epicentre of global luxury perfumery. Home to iconic maisons such as Chanel, Dior, Guerlain, and Hermès, the city continues to define trends in modern fragrances. From boutique niche perfumeries to grand flagship stores along the Champs-Élysées, Paris offers immersive sensory experiences that celebrate both tradition and innovation.
