Visa-free isn’t always free: Countries that still charge entry fees and travel taxes

Visa-free sounds like a dream, right? When you just thought that you might be able to save those extra bucks, you get that sweet surprise after landing. Therefore, visa-free doesn’t always mean cost-free. From mandatory online authorizations to cheeky tourism taxes, several countries still ask for a little something extra before they let you in. Spoiler: That ‘free’ trip? Might come with a digital invoice.
Here’s a closer look at countries that are visa-free, but still has some hidden taxes.

2/8

United States – ESTA

Applies to: Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries
Fee: $21 (as of 2024)
It applies to all those travelling from a country in the US Visa Waiver Program. They won't need a visa, but will require an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), which is essentially a background check with a price tag. All concerned travellers will need to apply for that before boarding that flight. If they miss this step, they won’t even get past airport check-in. For latest updates, check https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta.

Europe’s ETIAS – Coming soon

Applies to: 60+ visa-free nationalities

As per the latest development, the EU will be rolling out the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will be a pre-travel screening for citizens who previously entered the Schengen zone visa-free. It’s not a visa, but it does involve an online application, biometric data, and a fee. Think of it as Europe’s version of the ESTA—just in more languages. For latest updates, check https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/etias.

Sri Lanka – eTA required, even for visa-free countries

Fee: 92 – 180 USD
Yes, Sri Lanka offers visa-on-arrival and offers visa-free access to citizens of a handful of countries. But they still need to fill out an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before arrival. Even Indians, who often qualify for a cheaper visa, must apply and pay the fee online. For latest updates, check https://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/visainfo/center.jsp?locale=en_US.

5/8

Indonesia – Entry tax for Bali

Fee: IDR 150,000
Planning a beachy escape to Bali? Great. Just don’t forget the new Bali tourist tax, introduced in February 2024. Payable online or at the airport, the tax is mandatory—even for nationalities with visa-free access to Indonesia. For latest updates, visit https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id/.

Bhutan – Visa-free, but not budget-friendly

Applies to: Tourists from India, Bangladesh, and Maldives
Fee: Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of INR1,200 per night for Indians
Indian citizens don’t need a visa to enter Bhutan—but they do need to pay the Sustainable Development Fee. It’s a nightly charge that helps preserve Bhutan’s pristine environment. So while you might skip the visa queue, you’ll still be paying for those postcard views.

7/8

Kenya – Visa-free with a side of eTA

Applies to: All travelers as of 2024
Fee: $30
Kenya scrapped visas in 2024 and declared a glorious new age of visa-free travel. Catch: You still need to fill out an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). It’s quick and online—but it costs $30, and skipping it will get you booted off the entry list. For latest updates, check https://www.kenyaimmigration.org/

So, what's the catch with visa-free?

“Visa-free” simply means you are not required to go through the embassy paperwork, long queues, and fingerprinting rituals. But that also doesn’t mean zero admin. Many countries now use eTAs, arrival fees, or tourism taxes to screen visitors and fund infrastructure or sustainability projects.
