Leading 5 Platinum-Producing Nations

Platinum is one of the rarest and most valuable precious metals in the world, and only a handful of countries dominate its global supply. While platinum is used in jewellery, medical equipment, catalytic converters, and several high-tech applications, its availability largely depends on a few nations with strong geological advantages. Based on insights from the WorldAtlas, and World Population Review report on top platinum-producing countries, here is a breakdown of the key nations that produce around 97% of the world’s total platinum.

2/6

South Africa

By a significant margin, South Africa is the world's biggest producer of platinum. It produces 120,000 kg, as per the data. The Merensky Reef, Upper Group 2 (UG2) Reef, and Platreef are the three primary geological zones from which the nation's platinum is extracted. However, the sector faces difficulties like worker strikes, safety concerns, and protesters that have recently interfered with mining operations. These reserves have been the foundation of South Africa's mining industry for decades, and the country's output vastly outpaces that of any other country, indicating the extent of its subterranean wealth.

3/6

Russia

With 23,000 kg produced annually, Russia is the world's second-largest producer of platinum. In 1823, platinum was initially found in the Ural Mountains. With time, attention turned to Siberia's nickel-copper resources, especially on the Taimyr Peninsula, which are today a significant supplier of platinum.
Due to its continuously high production from well-established mining operations, Russia continues to be an important supplier in the global platinum market even if its overall output is significantly smaller than South Africa's.

4/6

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is another major contributor, producing around 19,000 kg of platinum annually. Almost all of Zimbabwe’s platinum comes from the Great Dyke, a long geological feature. The country’s major platinum mines include, Mimosa, Zimplats, and Unki.
The country’s consistent output reflects strong ore quality and significant reserves concentrated in a relatively narrow geological region.

5/6

Canada

According to the research, Canada generates about 5,500 kg of platinum annually. The Sudbury Basin in Ontario and nickel mines in Manitoba and Quebec, such as the Raglan mine and a mine in Western Ontario, provide the majority of this platinum.
Though its production numbers are smaller compared to South Africa and Russia, Canada remains an important secondary contributor to the market.

6/6

United States

The United States produces about 2,900 kg of platinum annually, placing it among the world’s notable producers. The production comes from only two mines, which are Stillwater Mine, near Nye, Montana, and East Boulder Mine, near Big Timber, Montana.
While the US does not hold the vast geological advantages of South Africa or Russia, it maintains a reliable level of production thanks to high-grade deposits in select regions.
