This hill town is the most ‘peaceful’ in India: 5 reasons why travellers are choosing silence over anything else

In a time when nearly all ‘famous’ hill stations are struggling with noise pollution, traffic jams, constant honking, long queues, in short overtourism, a quiet mountain town in Himachal Pradesh is drawing attention for doing the exact opposite. Yes, this lesser-known hill station is known for its silence and beauty and surprisingly is less than 15 km from Shimla. This hill town is known as Mashobra. The small settlement in the hills is making headlines because it has been named in travel reports and destination rankings as one of India’s most peaceful hill towns.

Here are five reasons why travellers are choosing Mashobra’s silence over Shimla’s crowded cafes:

The paradise-like location

Set at an altitude of about 2,146 metres in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, Mashobra is all about dense deodar, oak, pine and rhododendron forests. The apple orchards here are simply breathtaking. And let’s not even get into the scenic Himalayan views. It’s simply like a paradise on earth.

Mashobra feels different and too quiet to be true

Mashobra offers a quieter alternative from many overcrowded hill stations in Himachal Pradesh. And that’s exactly what its appeal is. There are no crowded cafes, no honking sound, no cars and no pressure to reach somewhere before it gets crowded. Visitors come here just to spend their holidays walking through forest trails and soaking in the silence. There are some cafés offering unbelievable views of mountains. The region’s protected forest cover has helped preserve its peaceful character, offering Mashobra an old-world mountain charm.

The soul of the place are the apple orchards. Walking through orchard-lined roads remains one of the town’s most memorable experiences.

Prime attractions

Reserve Forest Sanctuary and Craignano Nature Park: Reserve Forest Sanctuary and Craignano Nature Park are among Mashobra’s prime attractions for nature lovers. The Reserve Forest Sanctuary is noted for its dense cedar, oak and pine forests. If lucky, travellers can see barking deer and rare Himalayan birds along the trails. Adventure lovers would love Shali Tibba which is among the highest points in the region.

Mahasu Devta Temple: This centuries-old temple is dedicated to the local deity Mahasu Devta.

How to Reach Mashobra

By Road: Mashobra is about 365 km from Delhi and around 13 km from Shimla. Travellers can drive via Chandigarh and Shimla from Delhi to reach here. It takes around 7–8 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.

By Train: The nearest major railhead is Kalka Railway Station. From Kalka, travellers can board the famous Kalka-Shimla Toy Train, a UNESCO-recognised mountain railway. It takes travellers through tunnels, bridges and offers stunning Himalayan views. From Shimla, Mashobra is a short taxi ride away.

By Air: The nearest airport is Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti), located around 30 km from Mashobra.

Slower life, a new travel trend

While Mashobra town does not promise endless attractions, it offers something beyond, the much-needed silence which is rare in modern travel. Today, travel trends have shifted towards slower, quieter and more meaningful experiences. The town completely fits the description and that is why it has gained such popularity.
