Real-life places to see Anacondas up close — if you dare!

The word ‘anaconda’ might send a chill down your spine, or if you have watched the cult 90s thriller, you will know it. Either way, the world’s largest snake by weight and girth is every bit as fascinating as it is fearsome. Native to the dense, murky wetlands and rivers of South America, the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) is known for being a master of stealth, often lurking just beneath the surface. For thrill-seekers and wildlife lovers alike, spotting one in the wild is a rare and unforgettable experience.

If you are brave enough, here are some of the best places in the world where you can (safely!) try your luck at seeing anacondas in their natural habitat.

2/7

Amazon Rainforest, Brazil

Let’s start with the obvious. The Amazon is prime anaconda territory, especially in the swampy areas around the Amazon River. Green anacondas thrive in slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, and marshes. Many wildlife tours depart from Manaus, the capital of Brazil’s Amazonas state. If you’re serious about spotting one, consider a guided jungle expedition where expert trackers might help you increase your odds.

3/7

Los Llanos, Venezuela

Often overshadowed by the Amazon, the Los Llanos region of Venezuela is a vast tropical grassland that offers unbeatable opportunities to spot anacondas. This ecosystem is one of the best kept secrets for spotting wildlife, including green anacondas. Tourists visiting during the wet months (May to October) often report sightings of these massive snakes basking in the sun or slowly gliding through shallow waters.
Many eco-lodges and tour companies offer wildlife safaris that include anaconda tracking.

4/7

Pantanal, Brazil

If the Amazon is the jungle’s heart, the Pantanal is its watery soul. This immense tropical wetland, the largest in the world, spans Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. It’s also one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, and home to anacondas galore.
The Brazilian side is the most accessible, especially via cities like Campo Grande and Cuiabá. During the dry season (July to October), animals congregate around shrinking water sources, making wildlife watching, yes, even for anacondas.

5/7

Orinoco Delta, Venezuela

Remote and wild, the Orinoco Delta is a tangled network of rivers, swamps, and rainforest in northeastern Venezuela. It’s less touristy than Los Llanos but equally rich in biodiversity. Local Warao guides know the land intimately and can take you on unforgettable canoe trips where you might spot everything from toucans and caimans to, you guessed it, anacondas.

6/7

Yasuni National Park, Ecuador

Located in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, Yasuni National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its staggering biodiversity. The area’s slow-moving rivers and oxbow lakes are favorite haunts for green anacondas, especially during the wet season. Eco-lodges and river cruises departing from Coca offer guided tours through this pristine wilderness.

7/7

Madidi National Park, Bolivia

A lesser-known Amazonian gem, Madidi National Park is a lush, isolated expanse in northern Bolivia. It’s harder to get to, but that also means fewer crowds and a more raw, authentic experience. Anacondas are among the many species found here, particularly in marshy backwaters and riverbanks.
Anacondas aren’t out to eat you, they’re shy, mostly nocturnal ambush predators. But they are powerful, and they deserve respect. Always travel with experienced guides, never wander into wetlands alone, and remember: you’re in their home.
So if you dare, pack your boots, grab your binoculars, and head for the wetlands.
