Rains in Himachal Pradesh: 5 precautions travellers must take while planning a trip

Himachal Pradesh in the rains is all about misty valleys, glistening pine forests, clouds covering the mountaintops, and the tea that never tasted better. But before you pack your bags and channel your inner mountain monk, let’s also not forget that monsoons in Himachal are unpredictable and if your luck is not by your side, you might get stuck. One moment you’re all enthusiastic, and the next you're stuck in a 6-hour traffic jam because of so many possible reasons.
So, if you're planning a trip to Himachal during the rainy season, here are 5 smart precautions to pack along with your umbrella:

2/6

Check the weather

Yes, it sounds obvious. But we mean check it daily, check it hourly, and cross-check it with at least two weather apps, and also probably with somebody who lives there. Himachal’s weather can go from postcard-pretty to landslide-alert faster than you can imagine. Avoid venturing into high-altitude areas if there's a red alert, and trust the locals, they’ve survived more monsoons there.
Pro tip: Websites like IMD and local news channels offer the most updated rain alerts. Keep them bookmarked.

3/6

Avoid shortcut, scenic route, or “It looks close on Google Maps”

Monsoons are when Himachal’s charming backroads turn into slushy slip-and-slides or, worse, get blocked due to landslides. Stick to main highways or routes that are regularly cleared and monitored. That charming “hidden village” you saw on Instagram may not be accessible during this time. So double-check before you venture out.

4/6

Travel insurance

Rain-induced delays, road blockages, flight cancellations, can make monsoon travel in Himachal unpredictable. Get travel insurance. It will cost you money, but when your bus from Manali gets stuck halfway and your hotel refuses a refund, you'll be glad you invested those extra INR 500.

5/6

Waterproof everything

We’re talking rain jackets, sturdy shoes, plastic covers for your electronics, quick-dry clothes, and if you're fancy, maybe even a rainproof backpack. Because wet jeans, zero power, and no Wi-Fi are pretty much monsoon staples. If you are fine and happy carrying those extra things, congratulations, you’re now a certified hill traveler.

6/6

Stay flexible, and expect the unexpected

Your planned itinerary says sunrise at Jalori Pass and riverside lunch by 2 PM? Nice. In reality, landslides could reroute you through three towns you’ve never heard of, and you’ll end up having paranthas at a dhaba. That’s the Himachal monsoon for you—always be flexible with your itinerary and expect the unexpected.
