Monsoon in Kerala: Backwaters, Wayanad Trails & Ayurvedic Escapes

When monsoon clouds collide with the hilly slopes of the Western Ghats, Kerala becomes a rain, revival, and festive orchestra. It is the time when life blossoms in all the nooks and corners, buds burst open, rivers spill over, and hills are clad in greenery. From peaceful backwaters to misty Wayanad treks and therapeutic Ayurvedic massages, this is the way to truly experience Kerala in the rains.

2/7

Houseboat Cruising through the backwaters

The Kerala backwaters, especially near Alleppey and Kumarakom, acquire an ethereal loveliness in the monsoons. Rain falls gently on the roof of the houseboat as you float over emerald paddy fields and fog-shrouded canals. Monsoon adds a poetic charm, and each sight is reminiscent of a watercolor. It is a very intimate and tranquil experience that brings you closer to the soul of Kerala and its ancient romance with water.

3/7

Wayanad Trails in Monsoon

Wayanad becomes a green, mystical haven in monsoon, ideal for nature and adventure enthusiasts. Take a hike to the Meenmutty Waterfalls through the rain-soaked forests, or enjoy the scenic view of India's largest earthen dam, Banasura Sagar Dam. Pookode Lake is calm boating amidst misty woods, while the Chembra Peak trek takes you through the vistas of the heart-shaped lake. For adventure enthusiasts, experience waterfall rappelling, ziplining at Karlad Lake, bamboo rafting, or off-road safaris.

4/7

Monsoon Ayurvedic Rejuvenation Therapy

The Kerala monsoon brings traditional Karkidaka Chikitsa to the center stage, an Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapy. The climatic conditions of this time, particularly July and August, are found to be most favorable for Panchakarma, a five-fold detoxifying therapy eliminating toxins from the system. In this seasonal practice, Karkidaka Kanji, a medicated porridge prepared from herbs, roots, and spices, is ingested to boost immunity.

5/7

Onam: Kerala's Rainy Season Pulse in Culture

Onam, Kerala's grand festival of joy, harvest, and celebration, occurs in the late monsoon. Houses are flower-carpeted, roads are drum-ringing, and towns come together for traditional dance and games. The Onam Sadya meal, a regal banana-leaf spread, is a feast for Kerala's gastronomic extravagance.

6/7

Snake Boat Races in Kerala

Kerala's monsoon is incomplete without the excitement of its traditional snake boat races, a game in which sport, culture, and festivity blend together. The most popular is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Alleppey, during August. Long, elegant chundan vallams (snake boats) cut through the rain-filled backwaters, driven by scores of oarsmen rowing in sync.

7/7

Munnar trails

Munnar during monsoon is a green, misty heaven with serene experiences. Stroll through tea and spice plantations graced by rain, taking in scenic vistas and the aroma of freshness. Trek to Eravikulam National Park or stroll softly through Anamudi Peak and Pothamedu Viewpoint with a guide. Go to the Tata Tea Museum for a peaceful, less-congested learning session. Go to waterfalls such as Attukal and Nyayamakad carefully, and immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty at Mattupetty Lake and Lockhart Gap.
