Jungle of Satpura: 5 experiences that are not to be missed

If the idea of Madhya Pradesh only conjures images of Khajuraho temples and Sanchi Stupa, it’s time to think beyond that. There are many popular national parks and hidden in plain sight are the Satpura jungles, untamed, lush, and mercifully under-hyped. Far from the tiger traffic of Bandhavgarh or the selfie crowd of Ranthambore, Satpura Tiger Reserve offers the kind of wilderness that you might not have experienced yet. So if you're headed into this wilderness, here are 5 Satpura experiences that absolutely should make it to your wild bucket list:

2/6

Canoe Safari

Yes, Satpura is one of the few tiger reserves in India that lets you float your way through the forest. Forget the dust and engine noise of a jeep—hop into a silent canoe and glide across the Denwa River, surrounded by mist, mangroves, and mystery. You’ll see crocodiles lounging there, kingfishers, and maybe if you are too lucky, see a leopard coming for a drink. It’s both thrilling and adventurous.

3/6

Walking Safari

How wild are you really if you haven’t strolled through a tiger reserve without a vehicle buffer? Satpura is one of the rare parks that allows walking safaris with trained naturalists. You won't be chasing tigers on foot, but you’ll learn to read the forest like a storybook, pugmarks, claw scratches, dung diaries and all.

4/6

Night Safari in the buffer zone

Most parks shut by sunset. Not Satpura. Head into the buffer zone for a night safari, and welcome to the forest’s after-dark edition. Civets, porcupines, owls, and the glowing eyes of nocturnal wonders, it’s a whole other world out there. The eerie stillness, punctuated by sudden rustles, is enough to make your city soul feel deliciously primitive.

5/6

Madhai Gate Sunrise

The Madhai entrance of Satpura is not just a gateway, it’s a spiritual awakening. Arrive just before sunrise, hop on a boat, and watch the sky turn gold over the river. The mirror-like waters, chirping birds, and slow reveal of the jungle are pure nature ASMR.

6/6

Stay in a forest lodge

Skip the generic resorts. Satpura is home to some of India’s finest eco-lodges, where you wake up to alarm calls from langurs, and fall asleep to cricket choirs. These lodges bring sustainability with comfort, and most have naturalists who double up as wilderness encyclopedias. Treehouses, riverside tents, jungle cottages—you’re spoiled for choice and serenity.
