ISKCON temples around the world that come alive during Janmashtami

The birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, known as ‘Janmashtami’, is a widely celebrated festival that even transcends borders. Beyond India’s borders, there are ISKCON temples all over the world that celebrate the day with great enthusiasm and spiritual energy. These temples are also famous for the diversity of their architecture; they provide the perfect blend of traditional Hindu elements and the local environment there.
Let’s look at the ISKCON temples all over the world that celebrate Janmashtami:

ISKCON Bhaktivedanta Manor – Watford, UK

This was an English manor house originally known as Piggott's Manor, located in the Hertfordshire countryside near Watford. This temple is very beautiful with a fusion of classic English manor-style heritage with adaptations for Hindu worship. The temple interiors are ornately decorated with shrines dedicated to Radha and Krishna, with floral motifs and altar decorations that contribute to the spiritual ambiance. This temple hosts massive festivals for Janmashtami which draw a lot of devotees. The celebrations include elaborate deity worship, all-night kirtans, dramatic reenactments of Krishna’s pastimes, and vegetarian feasts (prasadam). The whole temple is lit up with celebrations, and many eco-friendly elements are also added to reflect Krishna’s teachings.

ISKCON Los Angeles (New Dvaraka), USA

This temple is situated in Los Angeles. This temple is both a traditional temple and a cultural center. The festivities of Janmashtami here include performing an abhishekam, Jhulan Yatra – Swing Ceremony, kirtans throughout the day, along with dance performances and a grand celebration at midnight for Krishna’s birth.

ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Londonishvara – London, UK

This temple has a special place in the history of ISKCON as the Radha-Krishna idols paved their own way here, and the owner of these idols himself gave them to Srila Prabhupada – Murli Manohara Dasa, head pujari, ISKCON London himself. It serves as a vibrant hub for daily worship, outreach, and cultural programs and is located in the heart of London’s Soho district. The temple hosts a lot of festivities, including kirtan, bhajans, and the grand midnight aarti for the deities. Streets around the temple are often filled with devotees. Govinda, the restaurant here, serves special festival prasadam throughout the event.

ISKCON Toronto – Canada

This temple is also known as the Hare Krishna Temple in Toronto, and it’s the largest ISKCON temple in Canada. This temple will provide special darshans of the deities in the morning, when melodious kirtans will also be held. The structure is a heritage church building repurposed into a vibrant Krishna temple; since it is repurposed, some of the Gothic elements are still present in the temple. Thousands attend over the course of the day, and free prasadam is distributed to all. The temple also streams the celebration for international viewers.

ISKCON Durban – South Africa (Sri Sri Radha Radhanath Temple of Understanding)

This temple is located in Chatsworth and is one of the most famous ISKCON temples in the southern hemisphere. The temple has been acclaimed as an architectural masterpiece – a spiritual wonderland. It has three colossal domes of white and gold rising above a dazzling octagonal roof. The architecture blends classical Indian temple design with modern materials, earning it the nickname "Temple of Understanding". This temple hosts South Africa’s largest Janmashtami festival with kirtans all day, cultural dance and performances, and deity dressing.

ISKCON New Govardhana – New South Wales, Australia

This temple is set in the rural Tweed Valley region and is on top of a hill with panoramic views of the forest. The architecture is simply beautiful. Janmashtami celebrations include bhajans being sung, aarti, Krishna book reading, and a swing festival as well as a feast at midnight. It is lit with beautiful lights at night, creating a festive atmosphere.

Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple – Utah, USA

This temple is located in Spanish Fork, Utah, and is known mainly for bringing Indian culture to the American West. The architecture of this temple is a blend of North Indian Rajasthani style with influences from the Kusum Sarovar region in Vrindavan. The temple features sandstone-colored domes, ornate arches, and hand-carved pillars. This temple holds grand celebrations for Janmashtami with classical Indian dance, live music, abhishekam, and puppet shows on Krishna leela.

ISKCON New Vrindaban – West Virginia, USA

This temple is located in Marshall County, West Virginia, in the United States. The Palace of Gold is entirely built by devotees with marble, gold leaf work, and semi-precious stones. This temple is modeled after Vrindavan in India. Celebrations include grand abhishekam ceremonies, kirtan, cultural dramas, fireworks, midnight aarti, and feasts for thousands. Special guided tours of the Palace of Gold are offered to festival visitors, making Janmashtami here a combined spiritual and artistic experience.
